That did the trick! Video can now be seen in the activity stream using IE8.

The only other issue I can see is in my personal activity. My posted video's are cut off on the right side. When I go to a members page and view their activity, any videos that they have posted are cut off on the right side also. I could probably live with this, but it's very annoying. Is their anyway to resize the video to those pages?

hi
you can fix this issue by opening _inc/css/base.css and go to line 268 and delete this css

.widget object, .widget embed, .widget param {}

also open _inc/css/base.css and go to line 427 and delete this css

div.widget img {}

and also open _inc/css/global.css and go to line 133 and delete this css to fix the ie8 img issue
p img { }

Hi...I spent a few hours today testing oembed on all 15 of the BuddyDress themes as well as the Buddypress default theme and a few others using IE8. The plugin works perfectly with every theme except the Social theme. This leads me to believe that it probably has something to do with the Social theme itself. Any thoughts on this?

@send2df571: Perhaps as we appear to now be in the plugin / media area of issue rather than the theme I could suggest you post on the plugin's forum just if nothing else to see if they have experienced this in their default testing? Maybe could you also try the default theme and let us know if you have the same not working in IE with that one? I'd like to get some base results for this if I could from you.

Hiya,

Sorry for the slow response. No worries though, I'm not frustrated with the questions, but the solution for IE escapes me. :P

You are right, IE's usage is very widespread so it is important to take into account. So I'll keep on the lookout, but this is really odd to me and since I run my test installs from a mac I can't easily trouble-shoot it. However, I WILL keep on the lookout as I enjoy a good challenge!

I followed your instructions and deleted line 272 "height:auto;" and now the video is at the right height and looks great. Still no video using IE8 in the activity stream.

I'm with you, I don't like IE either. Unfortunately, since IE comes bundled with Windows millions of people use it, which is a problem if I'm going to use this template. Do you think theirs a solution for this issue? I know this must be frustrating for you, and I really appreciate your help!

Hiya Send2,

Sorry about that, I missed your response here.

I'm going to assume (hope) that you have ftp access and can get to your themes directory in WordPress. We're going to have you edit a specific property in one of the files which will hopefully get us some results!

Go to this file on your server (through ftp or a file manager through cPanel, etc)
wp-content>themes>bp-social>_inc>css>base.css

Once there open the file (or in cPanel you'll select "edit").
Now in base.css we're going to scroll down to line 268 which says ".widget object, .widget embed, .widget param {"

Below that you see a series of properties all for different things. The one we're concerned about is "height".

You need to delete the entire line "height:auto;" so that everything else slides up a line. Then save the file.
Now all your video content will display at the correct height! :D

Now, as to Internet Explorer, I'm not sure whether this will fix this issue. Which version of IE are you running? I'm not a fan of this browser, personally though IE9 which is to be released soon shows some promise. I don't have a test install that I can test this at the moment, but looking at your site through IE I can see that it is loading the video in the source, just not displaying it. Argh...

Everything works fine (except the height issue) using Firefox, Chrome, and Opera browsers, but video does not show in the activity stream using internet explorer. I tried using internet explorer from a friends computer and still no video in the stream. Is there a compatibility issue with internet explorer? Also, where do I insert the code to try to fix the height issue. I'm learning this stuff as I go...

@All: Perhaps just try:

.widget object, .widget embed, .widget param {
display:block !important;
float:left;
height: 100%;
margin:0;
max-width:100%;
padding:0;
text-align:center;
}

*note: not sure what impact this has OR you can in base.css change to remove the height value totally.

Hiya,

No apologies necessary for being new. We're all new at some point! :D

I think there may have been a browser caching issue causing you not to see the videos because I've just checked out your site in both firefox and chrome and I see three videos in your Activity Feed and the latest video on your profile page.

I am noticing the cropping issue of the videos and I'll see if I can get Tammie to chime in on the best way to handle this from within the child's style.css. For now I don't see a way to do this "gracefully" but you could add something like:
.widget embed {
height: 400px;
}

All your videos will then have this height. Like I said, less than graceful, but I'm sure Tammie'll have a better idea. Let me know if you're still unable to see the other videos showing up though. Try a different browser and try clearing your browser cache. Thanks!

My apologies for the confusing post above, I'm kind of new to this, so please bare with me. After posting a few video's, and testing them on my site, this is what I've found:

I’m getting video on my profile page since I installed the oembed beta plugin. But, you can't see the video, nor a link to the video in the activity stream. If I post additional video it shows up on my profile, but the previous video is gone. Since they aren't showing up in the activity stream, the older video's are lost. Also, the video is to large for the viewing area. Assumming that we are able to fix the activity stream problem, is their a way to resize the video to the page?

Hey...I installed the oembed beta plugin, but there is still a problem. When I click the activities link on the upper right side of my home page, then post a link from youtube, I get no video and no link to video is displayed either. When I refresh the page, the video url shows up at the top of the page in the recent posts section with a "view" link next to it. When I click the "view" link the video appears, but is to big for the viewing area. Also, when I return to my home page and click on the activities tab on the menu bar and go to that page, no video or link to video is displayed. Confused yet? lol. If you go to my website at http://redrim.com and post a video link, you'll see what I mean. Please check out the activities pages from both the menu tab and the links section as these are two different pages, and seem to act differently from each other as far as posting video is concerned.
Your help is greatly appreciated!

Hmm. That is truly odd. Does the theme just display a link rather than the content?

You also might try the latest beta. Maybe a clean install will help?

I have wordpress 3.0.1 installed, and am using BuddyPress Version 1.2.5.2. My problem is that my oEmbed for BuddyPress plugin does not work with my BuddyDress Social theme. The plugin works fine with the default BuddyPress theme. Is there a fix for this?
