Wikiroma: an example of BuddyPress

June 1st, 2009 Posted in reviews |

wikishotToday i’m gonna show you a nice example of MU + Buddypress. I’m talking of Wikiroma, a city blog network about life in Rome, that i’ve recently restyled. The website is not fully finished, but i’m proud to show it because there is an heavy customization of  MU.

The member theme, that is not complete, is a custom version of the Shouty Theme that you can found here in BuddyDress. I’ve built my own loops to extract posts for category AND tag when needed, and some other tricks. A problem i’ve had was the use of jcarousel scripts because they give some problems with the BuddyPress jcarousel livequery, and so i’m studying a solution to this.

Do you like it?

Sgrunt – I’m interested to know what plug in you used for the photo section on the front page? I want to say it’s the Featured Gallery plug in, but I can’t seem to get that working using Wordpress MU?

    Your input would be great!

    Thanks.

Sgrunt, thanks for the info. Couldn’t you use Buddypress’s built in sitewide blog posts widget to pull the posts into the main page? Or does the wp-postratings plugin not work with that?

Also, if you insert the postratings code in the individual post, will the ratings carry over?

I see. I would love to start something for my own city. I think its both greatly useful and ace looking!

    Well done again

Wow, that is a nicely done site.

Hi, there is a fundamental plugin that i have not listed below: the Donncha Site Wide Tags. Using it, i copy all the network posts on a main blog, and actually i rate posts only on the main blog. I could show the most rated posts using the widget, but i’m still doing some experiments, i want to decide if ratings are an useful feature or not.

Great theme! Interesting that you use wp post ratings. So its possible to rate posts that show up in site wide blog posts on the home theme? Do the ratings retain across the whole domain (I.E. can I create a separate blog that contains highest rated blog posts?)

I think i’ll release a magazine theme in future. Wikiroma is not a matter of theming, the website is a bit hardcoded and so it is not suitable for all the MU installations.

    Hi,

I would like to know if there might be a release of the theme.

I think this is absolutely amazing! Keep up the good work!!

Sweet! You should think of releasing Wikiroma as a theme. I’d like to use it on a website I’m creating.

    thats is amazing

sure:i don’t use too much plugins. Geopress for map, wp post ratings for…the ratings, Anarchy for embedding videos into posts.

    Nice work!

Will you also be able to share the plugins you used to set this up?

    cheers,
    Armand
